PEP 541 Request: genotools #3439

Closed dvitale199 closed 3 months ago

dvitale199 commented 11 months ago

Project to be claimed

genotools: https://pypi.org/project/genotools

Your PyPI username

dvitale199: https://pypi.org/user/dvitale199

Reasons for the request

I'd like to claim this name for my repo. My team has been working on GenoTools for several years but did not want to upload it to pip until it was a useable package. Now that we are ready to upload it, I found that a non-functioning, non-documented set of scripts uploaded as a package using the same name. Our package has been used for numerous publications and has a growing user-base and we want to make it more widely available. We are preparing to submit a paper detailing the methods of this package to scientific journals this week. We fully intend to provide improvements and continuous support/development of the project going forward as we are actively using this for several large-scale, multi-year genetics projects.

Contact and additional research

"Hello,

I hope you're doing well.

I noticed you have https://pypi.org/project/genotools/ on pypi. I was wondering if there's any chance you'd be willing to remove or rename this so that I could add the following package to pypi https://github.com/dvitale199/GenoTools/.

Please let me know if there is something we can work out here as my team has been working on this package as a command line tool for some time and it appears that yours may be sufficient as a git repo at this time.

Best,

Dan Vitale"

The GenoTools paper is in preprint: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.03.26.586362v1.full.pdf

We have some confusion for users on pip due to users needing to pip install the_real_genotools (https://pypi.org/project/the-real-genotools/) to access our software. Is there anything we can do to resolve this? the corresponding github repo for the genotools pypi package has seen virtually no updates in several years aside from scripts (no actual package) while we are constantly updating and maintaining our package

I am awaiting a reply to the following message to the owner of the genotools Pypi project (sent on April 15th 2024):

"Hello,

I am reaching out again about this to see if our group could take over this Pypi name.

We now have a preprint out (https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.03.26.586362v1.full.pdf) and it would be quite helpful for us to use this name for clarity when we submit to journals (and for easier access).

I'd really appreciate it.

Let me know what you think, Dan"
