This is extremely important, many research organizations are not companies but non-profit or even state/international level organizations.
I just came here because I faced the same problem when adding my organization ( https://www.ofai.at/)which is not a company and not a community but has been a non-profit research institute for several decades. It strikes me as odd that this issue has been open for over a year now and there is still no way to specify a not-for-profit (research) organization, especially in a context where open-source is very often how Python packages are developed.
What would be the proper selection for universities, for contributors like CERN oder NASA? All companies?
What's the problem this feature will solve? In the newly announced organization accounts, non-profits are mentioned in the announcement. In signing up to create such an account, only "company" and "community" are available.
There are non-profit organizations - which are not community run organization - but a community serving organization. Is this the intention?
Describe the solution you'd like A distinction between community run vs community serving. Or clarity that one can sign up in this fashion. i.e. this might be a documentation issue - or clarification on website.
