Africa Knowledge Platform with multiple datasets

The Africa Knowledge Platform (AKP) offers public GIS data that can be useful and some may be integrated. Some worth mentioning are:

• Energy production by hydro, linked to #162 and #108
• Installed capacities of hydro plants
• Installed power capacities
• Evaporation of hydro reservoirs (may be useful though not in the short-term)
• Planned and existing network

And many others

Just analysed some source in the metadata:

• Installed power plant capacities: "This list of power plants is entirely based on open sources datasets (ECOWREX, WRI Global Power Plant Database, ENERGYDATA.INFO open data platform)." - Think powerplantmatching will be similar.
• Planned and existing network: "OSM, JRC and WorldBank datasets" - would be great if there was an API for updated plans on planned transmission lines. Regarding the existing network, we probably have soon the best data.

In general, I wish EU/JRC could instead of only publishing the data sets also share their scripts to generate these. This would help to improve our or their scripts, while keeping a direct connection to the primary databases i.e. OSM, WRI and co.

If we implement some hydro data, we should probably also make sure to have the connection to the primary data and write open source scripts for that in future. Using some of their dataset might be only a short-term solution :)
