Wouldn't this be better of as a part of the website, separated by OS and followed by a list of available plugins?

This would remove the flame war instead of adding more work to the moderators. Also not sure how often people ask about IDE's / editors.

I don't think so. I mean, you can't really have a discussion on the site - and we're not looking to build a forum here - plus, we already have the resources section, which is something anyone can open a merge request to modify.
