Problem installing gpaw with poetry #5913

Issue

I tried installing gpaw with poetry add gpaw but kept getting the following error. Gpaw has some c dependencies so it might be related to this, but I'm not sure how to move forward.

This package has

$ brew install libxc $ brew install open-mpi $ brew install fftw

as dependencies, but I'm not sure how to tell Poetry about that.

Can you install it with pip? what makes you think this is a poetry problem?

@dimbleby Yes, I can install it with pip, so I was curious why it didn't work with poetry.

Huh. Works fine on linux (after installing libxc-dev, libblas-dev), I can't help you with what's different about compiling stuff on mac.

I installed libxc and libblas and it still failed in Mac, FWIW

I'm not sure if poetry just isn't able to interact with libxc and liblas, but I even added their paths to my bash_profile

@dimbleby do you know how poetry fetches the header/interacts with Mac? It is odd for it to work with pip and not poetry. My guess is poetry is not pointing gpaw to a header where it expects libxc to be.

did you install the development versions of the packages? I don't know what mac conventions are but as above I had to install not libblas and libxc but rather libblas-dev and libxc-dev.

Perhaps pip is finding a binary distribution that it considers satisfactory but poetry for some reason does not. I've a feeling that there have been relevant fixes in poetry, the latest beta release may also be worth a try.

Running pip download and seeing what kind of artifact it spits out would be illuminating -- I imagine it's choosing a wheel based on Requires-Python or similar being different -- Poetry has more information so when you try to install with Poetry you could be getting a different version.

Problems getting the native deps in the right place to compile are external to Poetry. I'm going to close this for now pending some evidence that Poetry is not selecting a wheel it should, or similar.
