Main branch into develop post 0.10.1 release

Description of the change

This PR merges main into develop after the 0.10.1 patch release.

I've also reverted the __version__ and updated the release guide to explain that exactly these updates, updating/reverting the version and updating the release guide, can be done in the same PR as merging changes in main into develop. This reduces the number of required PRs post release from two to one.
