Description of the change

Update develop with changes on main for the 0.12.1 release.

I'll merge this myself once checks pass.

Progress of the PR

[n/a] Docstrings for all functions
[x] Unit tests with pytest for all lines
[x] Clean code style by running black via pre-commit
