It would be great to have some form of unittests to verify that it works 
correctly.

See attached file for example implementation.

In r20, I have committed the beginning of a unittest framework.  I still have 
to finish migrating the old XML tests 
into the new framework.

Once this is done, I'll go back and see about fixing some of the other issues.
