service crashing in a loop (highly detailed post) #14706

Hello

I don't usually post an issue unless I troubleshoot it for days. This issue appeared after a migration from an old server to an newer more powerful one. I searched a lot and it was mostly a permission issue on the internet but my case is different.

qBittorrent version and Operating System

Since this is a docker container the config volume was migrated to the new server to keep the current config, it was migrated once before from an even older server. and it was built from the same YAML File

The older server was running Flawlessly for years and downloaded Terabytes of data.

What is the problem

When I start a torrent it downloads for a while then stops and start downloading again from the start. And when I do a hash check it detects the old data and resumes from it. Then a few minutes later it stops again and resumes from the point it was on after the last hash check.

Lets break it into steps to make easier:

  1. Starting a download
  2. 5 min later it reaches 10%
  3. it suddenly stops
  4. and auto resumes again from 0%
  5. I do a manual hash check
  6. it detects the old data and resumes from 10%
  7. 5 min later it reaches 20%
  8. it suddenly stops
  9. and auto resumes again from 10%
  10. it detects the old data and resumes from 20%
  11. and so on and so forth

As you can see I have to babysit the application or it will keep looping the same part of the file.

What is the expected behavior

To download the whole file like normal

Steps to reproduce

Start qBittorrent from a container (I used linuxserver/qbittorrent:latest image) and limit the allowed memory and start downloading a file that is 4-5x times the allocated memory. I don't know if it will be same as my old server is working fine with same setup.

As you can see the pattern in the logs it is looping or more precisely the whole qBittorrent process is restarting.

This is a small part of the log it kept looping like this for so long before I noticed it.

Here is what I tried in troubleshooting:

and voila the container was hitting the memory cab and crashing after 40-60 sec.

The detailed information is appreciated. However, it would also be very useful to see your config (in plain text; redact any values you might not wish to share). It is possible, for example, that your disk cache is stet too high, causing you to run out of memory eventually, and crashing the service. What was the qBittorrent version that you used with the old server?

The config directory is mounted on a NVMe ZFS pool while the downloads directory is mounted on a HDD ZFS pool.

Since the main post after increasing the RAM the service never crashed. Guess it was just the resources were too limited but still confused as why this never happened on the old setup with only 300 MB of RAM allocated.

Maybe there was a bug in the old setup that was actually allowing qBittorrent to consume more than 300 MB of RAM and misreporting its usage? Or maybe you simply have many more torrents now?

Issue was reported on a very old version. If anyone still experiencing this please comment to reopen or create a new ticket.
