Completely revert all theming changes that occured on 4.5.0 #18426

Suggestion

4.5.0 theming issues and the subsequent reaction from the developer team to criticism reminds me of Stalin and Holodomor, that's just how bad it is. This has been by far the worst qBittorrent ever released and it's ugly to see all the attempts to defend it.

Latest qBittorrent compiled from master is still ugly, just hit the "FUCK GO BACK" button.

As it is I have no reason to ever unmask my qBittorrent package, I'll just leave it on an old version for months while I gather the patience to move to another torrent client due to security concerns.

Sorry for strong language but sometimes you gotta be blunt, you guys are making a terrible mistake, ruining the best torrent client and opening the way for a better-looking client to take the number 1 spot.

Please at least add a monochrome option for the icons or consider changing their style. They look very baby's first toy which might be fixed with monochrome. The other workaround is disabling the icons which is not ideal. Currently the rainbow vomit mixed with the icons style reminds me of a fisher-price toy or toy operating system like MacOS.

Thank you, this will make the new UI much more bearable if we can solve this one problem: there's only 1 fatal flaw with this theme which i am not sure is exclusive to my setup but the text color for torrent names/size/etc is black, which coupled with the alternating row of grey/darkgrey makes them almost unreadable unless they are the currently selected/highlighted one. When they are selected at least it is white text with the blue highlight. Without alternating row colors it is even more unreadable. @thalieht if this readability issue can be solved, this theme should be offered as a built in option in preferences for those that do not like rainbow colors. It makes the icon style completely usable so no extra work would be required of the main team besides adding a drop down to select colorful or monochrome.

The rest of the UI has white text with the grey background which is fine. It's only the actual torrent info section that has black text on grey or dark grey

Regardless if we can solve this or not thank you. i really like the monochrome.

b-user commented 1 year ago

Сhanged the text color to "#FCFCFC" (as in the window title in the screenshot), gray_dark.qbtheme.zip

Trying to use the "default" color (not sure about the result) gray_dark_t2.qbtheme.zip

Try it if you're interested. unpack zip, use as theme (don't forget to restart qbittorrent)

By the way, what is this OS and what is this theme ?

The icons are really terrible.

The icons are really terrible.

Expressing only one's opinion is not constructive criticism - there is no suggestion of solutions here.

Different people have different tastes and different opinions. . Therefore, Need more gold one of the solutions is more themes for different tastes.

In my opinion, the icons from 4.5.0 are more modern and harmonious than those from the previous 4.x. They are really nice.

b-user commented 1 year ago

Dissatisfied gentlemen (@raphael-costa, @NightFlexer, @nn7n)! Have you seen the post ? https://github.com/qbittorrent/qBittorrent/issues/18426#issuecomment-1399256201 You can use (this) theme with old icons (4.0 .. 4.4.5)

old-style

You can also use the 4.5.0 theme with changed colors (most of those who saw it said "OK"). But there were also those who liked the new theme. It is impossible to please literally everyone. Use a theme that you like (or dislike least). https://www.reddit.com/r/qBittorrent/comments/znm5ot/a_theme_with_a_changed_tone/ 450alt

If you want something concrete, not ephemeral, say so.

raphael-costa commented 1 year ago

Hi, Mr. Antagonist. I am using that, sadly it still looks awful compared to 4.4.5

I am looking for something concrete but Deluge was buggy from minute 1, ktorrent was ugly as well, biglyBT was confusing and weird and other torrent clients were simply not functional enough. Next step is going back to rtorrent but I don't want to go that route now that I've given up the CLI life. qBit Themes only fix a fraction of the problem, you folks seem to be ignoring the true extent of how much 4.5 ruined qbittorrent, you don't want to see it, you think it's simply some icons. I could tell you again but people have already told you.

My current nº 1 plan is using this build again: https://github.com/flathub/org.qbittorrent.qBittorrent/pull/92 -- Unfortunately flathub is only keeping the last 5 builds for qbittorrent so I'll have to build it, if I knew I would never have updated.

I'm currently reading: https://docs.flatpak.org/en/latest/first-build.html

Hopefully in a few minutes I'll have it ready, then I'll stop participating in this discussion and your problem (people complaining about the new terrible UI) will vanish, at least from my part, you can close this bug then.

I'll stay on 4.4.5 until potential security issues start occupying too much space on my head, then I'll go back to rtorrrent and using my symlink farm, thankfully I still have all the scripts I used back then.

So I bid farewell to Mr glassez and b-user who were clearly very bothered by my presence, the problem is gone! The user is gone! Not a bug, won't fix! All hail the new "modern" look!

Gobidev commented 1 year ago

I am totally with raphael-costa, the new icons look awful compared to the old. I wish there was an option in the settings to use the old icons, that would be a good compromise.

@b-user I use the web ui exclusively which has no obvious theming option, so the "fixes" suggested here won't work for me.

raphael-costa commented 1 year ago

Is this beauty? Not necessarily but it's consistent with the rest of my system.

# qBittorrent 4.4.5 instruction
git clone https://github.com/flathub/org.qbittorrent.qBittorrent.git
cd org.qbittorrent.qBittorrent/
git checkout bba6b1e
sudo flatpak-builder --install --force-clean build org.qbittorrent.qBittorrent.yaml

Screenshot from 2023-01-26 14-56-15

The problem is now fixed for me. As you can see, it's not just about icons and colors, but also the look-and-feel, I don't know the correct words but even with a perfect copy of 4.4.5 in the form of a theme it won't look beautiful like 4.4.5 did. Also it would only look the same for me on GNOME 43 with dark theme, use it on anyone else's computer and it would be different too.

Everytime the UI changes on any piece of software, it's the same circus: you complain for a week that it's terrible, look for ways to downgrade, then get used to it. Then the UI changes again and the cycle repeats.

qBittorrent is a tool. You're not supposed to stare at it, the new style conveys at a quick glance everything you need to know. The devs tweaking the UI is not comparable to a despot starving millions of his people.

@raphael-costa, I tried to help (created several themes), but you just got more and more offended. Sorry, I can't read your mind. I think it makes sense to describe the problem so that it is understandable to people. The flow of negativity without clear explanations causes confusion. If you had initially clarified that we are talking about a web interface (WebUI) or GUI "on GNOME 43 with dark theme", your claims would have been understandable. I am not a member of the qBittorrent team, I am just a user. Moreover, my profession is not related to the development of cross-platform applications and QT . I do not receive a salary from qBittorrent, and what I have done is the result of my goodwill, the use of my free time and the desire to help users.

I repeat: I had a desire and free time - I made themes that I liked and some users liked. Why don't you do the same for your preferences? Or are you only able to consume without giving anything in return? You don't want to do anything? What prevents you from staying on 4.4.5?

Funny enough, "tweak" is an interesting choice of word in this case.

Do you want to go into linguistics? well, tell me which one-word synonym in Portuguese is suitable for "fine-tuning a mechanism or system". I'm really interested in this.

raphael-costa commented 1 year ago

aprimorar

What prevents you from staying on 4.4.5?

Nothing and it's the way to go since the devs ruined it.

So, want to keep denying the truth for how long?

b-user commented 1 year ago

If you are looking for Whipping boy please look elsewhere.

As far as I know, Linux users consider themselves advanced users who can do a lot. I am a Windows user and yet I was able to adapt the existing theme to my preference. If you are an advanced user - present a theme that reflects your desires. In this way you will benefit the community.

PS. I can't say that I was delighted with the old theme. Thus, I do not share the point of view about ruining. PPS. for example, overclocking a cpu is not "aprimorar", but tweaking. English is not my native language, but I understand the difference. Not all thesauri are synonymous, especially in different contexts.

leucome commented 1 year ago

Seriously at first I tough it was a bug. Then after trying to figure out why the color were all broken I finally found that it was really the default theme.

Even after a couple of month there is no way to get used. It does not work with grey/dark system. It is hard to read there not enough contrast between the text and the background and the icon set is a way to bright. These are are real functional issues. Maybe it work with light theme but in dark mode it is pretty bad.

So I am also going back to the old version. If they really want to keep this theme, then they will probably need to implement an option to chose theme and provide a couple of alternative.

RandomKartopfel commented 1 year ago

What prevents you from staying on 4.4.5?

That's exactly what I did, downgrading qbittorent version to 4.4.5 once again, once more disappointed that even 4.5.1 version changed nothing to bad color scheme choice. None of the themes linked here brought back pre-4.5.0 colors, unfortunately.

But you know what's the main issue here? It's this strange mentality "if you don't like it, just stay on the older version". It brings memories about utorrent - some people still stay on 2.2.1, some pick random versions "best one before ads", some use latest - it's just huge fragmentation chaos. Looks like qbittorent doesn't mind to go this route too with latest changes. "Just stay on the old version" they say..

glassez commented 1 year ago

After each update, there are people who are dissatisfied with this or that change, so they prefer to stay on the previous version. If we rolled back the changes every time, then we can say that qBittorrent was not updated at all, so you would still use the old version (from a functional perspective). But at the same time, all other users who are usually satisfied with updates would suffer. So we usually prefer to look for compromise solutions, rather than "blindly" revert the changes made. The fact that this is not being done as quickly as you would like is simply due to a lack of development resources. So please be patient while waiting for a solution that is acceptable to you. In the meantime (if absolutely unbearable), of course you can use the previous version as a workaround.

Just came here to say the icons and theming on the latest qB look horrendous. It is important to never change upload and download icons. The old ones were industry standard. Even otherwise, the new icons and theming look like a Chinese app like qq or similar.
