stuck on downloading metadata #20210

qBittorrent & operating system versions

qBittorrent: 4.6.2 Operating System: Sonoma macOS 14.2.1

What is the problem?

Every torrent I try to download gets stuck on "downloading metadata." I've tried not only the latest version of qBittorrent, but many of the previous versions (as far back as 4.2.1). All the torrents I am trying have plenty of seeds and I am not using a VPN, as I tried first with my VPN, but then closed the app once I saw it was not working.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Search a torrent on qBittorrent
  2. Double click file
  3. Click okay

Yes, this happens all the time especially with some sites. It's a very old issue.

This is happening for me as well, I had this issue a couple years ago and it seemed to get better. Now in the last few months it is haunting me again. Literally thousands stuck in the Downloading metadata phase just sitting there doing nothing. I have changed interfaces to the specific TUN interface, re-announced, added extra trackers. Nothing.

Same problem here, changing listening port to something else then putting it back how it was fixes it, quite the annoying bug.

That doesn't work for me, I change the ports back and forth. I am connectable with around 450 DHT nodes. Still "downloading metadata"

Then your torrent is probably dead, the stuck on metadata issue is a decade old and has never been fixed to my knowledge, it happens randomly to any torrent no matter how popular it is. On the other hand, you can be stuck at this step if the torrent is dead and no one has the metadata for it. Example : Avatar 2, 2000 seeds, stuck on downloading metadata, probably a bug. Some obscure Thai roleplay po*n from 1988, one seed, stuck on downloading metadata, probably not a bug, just a dead torrent. In the first case, you could try another client to confirm that it's 100% qb shitting the bed. In the other one, even if you try something like deluge/transmission etc, you'll see that the torrent won't work either way.

I actually have tested some on Deluge and they end up working, but even if they were really dead I'd much prefer they report stalled or dead even if I had a setting to configure the time before considering it dead. I have a process that cleans stalled or dead torrents, downloading Metadata just sits there taking up attention for no reason

Same for me. Stuck on "Downloading metadata" when searched on internal QB search plugin. Never had such issue on third-party torrents. I have this bug both on 5.0.0 and on 4.4.7 versions. Seems the bug is old as hell, yeah? Almost year old and two major releases old. And seems it is not inherent to MacOS, because I'm on Win11 23H2.

Your screenshot shows that you already have metadata, so it's totally off-topic.

Otherwise status column would show Downloading Metadata instead of anything else.

Your screenshot even shows orange icon instead of green and low amount of DHT nodes, so I wouldn't be surprised if you have low amount of peers you can connect with even if you would try downloading something a lot more popular legal torrent.

And the problem is that you're asking for tech support in an irrelevant issue. If you want help open a new discussion (not issue unless you're sure qBt has some problem and it's not just a closed port problem or lack of seeds/peers).

@thalieht I'd suggest closing this (and similar https://github.com/qbittorrent/qBittorrent/issues/20889 https://github.com/qbittorrent/qBittorrent/issues/21325 etc) issues altogether, as that's always the problem.

wow, this was rude. If you want to clue somebody in that the issue is irrelevant, there are more respectful ways to do that. I would respectfully disagree with @stalkerok that that's always the problem of port problem or lack of seeds/peers While I have plenty of other active torrents in my list with downloads speeds up to 3.5Mb/s (so my port is not a problem), I just made a test and found a torrent

pressed "download" and it got stuck in "Downloading metadata" status, and it still stuck for 1 hour, while I write this issue

image If the torrent has 5 seeders, in my opinion it is more than enough to retrieve torrent metadata. If those seeds are fake, than you should give an actual seed status in the search plugin list and indicate for the user that he wouldn't be able to download that torrent. Otherwise those Seeders/leechers columns in search plugin are misleading

The search plugin takes the number of seeders/peers from the site, if the site reports incorrect data, there is nothing we can do.

You may think of it as rude, however we've advised that user on numerous tickets & user won't take advice....
