Data curator internationalisation #693

Desired Behaviour (for feature requests only)

I have just discover Data Curator 2 days ago and I think it's a great tool filling tha gap between spreadsheet and RDBMS. Such tool is perfect for end data user/producer to impove their awareness and skill around data. But for no english speaking people, dialog and messages should be in their native language.

So is there some plan to internationalise Data curator? For my own, I should contribute to french translation.

Thanks Sylvain

Hi Sylvan, I like this suggestion. While it’s not in our current plans, I’m happy to work with you to create a translation table. I’ll get things started and post it into this repository when it’s ready. Then you can add the translations. Would that be Ok?

4estone commented 6 years ago

It would be great!

@4estone here's a table you can contribute to:

there also a help tags table:

If we provide an language support in the user interface we should also support

https://frictionlessdata.io/specs/patterns/#language-support

The Frictionless Data Field Guide
A guide that provides step-by-step instructions for improving your data publishing workflow using Frictionless Data software

Ok for tables. I will contribute as soon as possible. I have to inform my n+1 first. I work for a french local government (Conseil Départmental du Bas-Rhin) For language support what does it means for me?

Stephen-Gates commented 6 years ago

Language support is a pattern - an approach for solving common problems in ways that are not (yet) specified in any Frictionless Data specification.

Language support would declare the language being used in the data package for the metadata and data.

The datapackage.json would include "languages": ["fr"] to inform people and computers that the language used is French.

Perhaps this would be implemented in the Set Data Package Properties and/or Set Preferences panel.

We'd need to give some thought around supporting more than one language in a single data package, e.g. indicating different languages in tables or columns

@4estone the tables I have added are not complete. Finding all the error messages in the code will take some time. It is more than enough to get you started. I'll add other rows as I find them (or you are welcome to add them if you find them before me)

Hi Stephen, Sorry for so long delay, but I'm back now. I was buzy on other projects. OpenData is now for me and my organisation one of our main goal. We decide to choose CKAN for our OD platform. For "ground"data producer, I would like to give us a tool like Data Curator. But this kind of users are not very familiar with English speaking UI. I made a first round on translating translate-ui.csv file. What's the good way now: pull request from my data curator fork? Other? Thanks

Stephen-Gates commented 5 years ago

Hi Sylvain, It would be great to start with a PR for the translation table. I'll speak with our sponsor about your interest in providing a French user interface. It will require some coding on our side which currently isn't in our scope. Of course you're welcome to submit a PR for switching the user interface language if you have coding skills?

4estone commented 5 years ago

I have some coding skills but not arround node.js (I'm a python enthusiast), and I dont know if I could sale this project to my boss more than translating ... May-be could you tell me more about what does involve switching the user interface?

Stephen-Gates commented 5 years ago

I'd imagine that we'd set a language in preferences. Then based on that setting the user interface labels and messages would display text in the appropriate language. I am not a programmer so can't help much more than that.
