Explore Kotlin vs Java #3

I had been assuming Java for the app this whole time, but @kfogel kindly challenged that assumption and suggested Kotlin is likely a better and more modern choice here.

I'm all for that; there will be a slight learning curve which will be climbed as part of the setup task which I am about to create.

Spent some cycles reading up on Kotlin -- going to close this issue, since Kotlin is the path we're moving forward with.
