QGIS 3.10.10: Can't browse GRASS locations

Describe the bug

Yesterday, using 3.10.9, I could brows GRASS repositories in the Browser. My "G" folders (my GRASS locations) appeared both as a folder, and again with the GRASS icon which exposed the mapsets and rasters and vectors therein. That special icon and view of the GRASS folder is gone.

This page on GRASS integration https://docs.qgis.org/3.10/en/docs/user_manual/grass_integration/grass_integration.html#loading-grass-raster-and-vector-layers says If you don’t see GRASS location item, verify in Help ‣ About ‣ Providers if GRASS vector provider is loaded.

On that page, I see

10. GRASS 7 raster provider

And I have all the GRASS tools listed under the "Processing Toolbox".

Finally, when I go to Plugins, GRASS is installed, but when I toggle it off and then on, I get this message in the QGIS Log:

2020-10-10T06:35:21 WARNING GRASS init error : Problem in GRASS initialization, GRASS provider and plugin will not work : Module built against version 2020-10-05T18:11:37+00:00 but trying to use version 2020-10-05T19:53:30+00:00. You need to rebuild GRASS GIS or untangle multiple installations.

As far as I know I only have 1 version of GRASS installed, by the OS, using the same deb source as QGIS. That GRASS version hasn't changed anytime recently, only QGIS has (yesterday, when this issue appeared).

I haven't done anything to change my GRASS install, only upgrade QGIS per the OS suggestion. I'm on Kubuntu 20.04 LTS using deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntugis/ubuntugis-unstable/ubuntu focal main in /etc/apt/sources.list.d.

I've tried a clean install. I removed everything related to QGIS and GRASS:

When I launch QGIS I get this in the Log Messages:

I note that a few days ago when I ran sudo apt upgrade that there was some conflict with QGIS and GRASS that lasted about 48 hours, then the upgrade from 3.10.9 to 3.10.10 worked, but this issue appeared.

Can you suggest how I can better test this on my machine given I just did this "clean" install? Should I set up a new VM that is even cleaner and see if this appears there?

@mankoff Recently grass was updated from 7.8.3 to 7.8.4 and I noticed the same warning on 3.10.10 and 3.12.16 on Windows10 with osgeo4w install Restoring 7.8.3 solved the warning.

I no longer have access to that version, and I'm hesitant to downgrade to 7.8.2. I think there were 7.8.3 features that I needed when that upgrade came out.

@mankoff On Focal GRASS is 7.2

and if you use the qgis.org that uses normal focal repositories for dependencies then I guess you have to stick to 7.2

OK that is clearly the source of the problem. Thank you. I'm not using LTS then, but am using the UbuntuGIS repository here https://launchpad.net/~ubuntugis/+archive/ubuntu/ubuntugis-unstable?field.series_filter=focal which did provide working versions of QGIS (3.10.9) built against GRASS 7.8.3 and GRASS 7.8.4. Perhaps I need to move this issue to there?

@mankoff there is a qgis.org repo specific to be used if you use also ubuntugis.

Yes thank you! In case anyone else finds this, setting up QGIS to use the qgis.org repo, with ubuntu-ltr (https://qgis.org/ubuntu-ltr) provides the latest LTR QGIS combined with the latest GRASS and a working plugin.

Hello again. Sorry to comment here, but I've run into the same issue and after reading the above thread am not sure how best to solve it. QGIS upgraded via sudo apt upgrade a few days ago, and the GRASS plugin stopped working again. I've tried to follow the earlier instructions which fixed this last October without downgrading to GRASS 7.8.2 (earlier thread at https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/issues/39302 ).

I think I'm properly loading sources from ubuntugis-ubuntu-ubuntugis-unstable-focal.list. I've removed all GRASS and QGIS installation (dpgk -l | grep -ie grass|qgis returns nothing. I then sudo apt install qgis. When I launch it, I get the following warning:

Hello again. Sorry to comment here, but I've run into the same issue and after reading the above thread am not sure how best to solve it. QGIS upgraded via sudo apt upgrade a few days ago, and the GRASS plugin stopped working again. I've tried to follow the earlier instructions which fixed this last October without downgrading to GRASS 7.8.2 (earlier thread at #39302 ).

I think I'm properly loading sources from ubuntugis-ubuntu-ubuntugis-unstable-focal.list. I've removed all GRASS and QGIS installation (dpgk -l | grep -ie grass|qgis returns nothing. I then sudo apt install qgis. When I launch it, I get the following warning:

@mankoff QGIS 3.16 on Ubuntu 20.04. QGIS is installed using qgis.org repos without using the Ubuntugis one. Opening a GRASS mapset/location and adding layers from it works ok.
