This is more of an "ideas" thread then a specific issue.
If you check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBxR3wAn6qM, you'll see a screencast showing background saving of vector layers. The point was raised that the current approach of a progress bar in the status bar isn't very prominent and users may not be aware that the saving is happening in the background.
I'm after advice on how best to address this. Some ideas already thrown round include:
showing message bar notifications when the task is started/finished
adding a new message-bar-like bar on the bottom of the map which shows the progress. Eg think the bar which appears when downloading files in chrome.
