Rename advanced digitizing tools to CAD tools #37

Open 3nids opened 7 years ago

3nids commented 7 years ago

Advanced digitizing tools in QGIS (i.e. the dock, not the tool bar) is a port of the CADinput plugin to core.

It was decided to avoid the "CAD" phrasing to avoid confusion with existing plugins.

I would like to propose to change this and rename the dock to "CAD tools" for the following reasons:

  1. It is the most accurate denomination
  2. It is shorter and simpler to recall
  3. It avoids confusion with the advanced digitizing map tools (i.e. the tool bar) which is kind of its parent
  4. I think we shouldn't use a less intuitive denomination to avoid confusion with plugins, it should be the other way around.
  5. Renaming for 3.0 is a good time frame
  6. Some small refactoring is on the way by @wonder-sk - again good timing

Thoughts?

+1. All valid reasons.

+1 also from me. It is confusing with the advanced digitizing map tools.

+1 from me

+1 from me. I take advantage of this survey to indicate that I will not develop my plugin (CADDigitize) for QGis 3 but integrate the elements directly into core. I have already started for some functions and a new class for the triangles (to finalize). This will make a less plugin on this subject.

@lbartoletti That's great news - your work pushing features upstream is very much appreciated!

Sorry about arriving late to the discussion. I agree that having advanced digitizing panel and advanced digitizing toolbar is quite confusing. But, although for most of us recognize the term CAD tools, I think it's not that intuitive to most users, hence, IMHO, it is not such an accurate denomination.

I'm improving this tool documentation in the user's manual. And to me, it feels that it's all about being able to digitize with precision. Maybe we could use that instead:
