Google Apps Script recently started allowing (and recommending) add-ons to be developed as standalone scripts instead of container-bound. This makes a lot of things possible b/c the script is visible from Google Drive, including collaborative development, integration with VCS and IDEs, CI testing, etc. See this blog post for the current state of the art.
