Highlights:

Error codes are now properly propagated, rather than a generic -1 value (fixes #1442)
Added more error cases to improve compatibility with the spec
Fixed the broken creat system call
Various improvements around styling, documentation and annotation

The tests crash on the last test container due to a bug in later Python releases. Once it is fixed, we can move on and merge this. [ref: python/cpython#115539]
