Attempt to fix #30 #31

This is my attempt to fix #30, by removing --user from the pip install. I'd be very surprised if it worked. I might try other things in this PR, too, as I think of them.

I got excited when all tests passed once I pushed a8aa0961591844503517d475e5e9520c5356c682 (see green check mark above), but it seems to have been a fluke, as I am unable to reproduce it again.
