Video is completely black, attempting to enter MiniPlayer immediately crashes the app #1018

Describe the bug

Sometimes when tapping on a new video, the video will launch completely black with audio. Any other videos I click on while this bug is active will still result in those subsequent videos appearing black. Any attempts to close the video or swipe the video down to the MiniPlayer will immediately crash the app. I have seen reports of similar black video issues, but my case seems different as it happens immediately (not after a few seconds) and I can’t fix it other than crashing/force closing the app.

Steps to reproduce the issue

  1. Wait for a video to eventually get the black video bug
  2. Attempt to close or swipe to MiniPlayer
  3. uYou+ crashes

I am also having the exact same issue. I am the latest sideloaded IPA of uYouPlus, unjailbroken on iOS 16.4 with an iPhone 14 Pro Max. Latest crash log. Although it happens enough I could share several more.

Still happens on 18.14.1-3.0 (using AltStore installed on model XR with iOS 16.6.1)

But it doesn’t crash for me.

Whenever starting up a video, or short, one in every 7 videos (stat made up but it seems random, cant find out the cause) will have a completely black screen, audio works fine, and re-attempting to watch by closing the video / miniplayer and reopening the video/short over and over can eventually solve it?

I was wondering if this has to do with youtube’s anti ad block stuff lately, I heard something about them blocking Firefox users IIRC?

Anyways, that might not be the case, because sometimes when I reopen the app while the bug is active on a regular video, the screen won’t be black, but will instead show a short that I had watched earlier…

Very strange and also kind of infuriating, will keep investigating to try and figure this out, assuming this black video player bug I’m getting now is the same one (seems to be the case) as this one.

I have yet to discover what causes this, but I think a clue is something I just figured out on accident…

If you swipe left to bring open the shorts uploader’s profile, it seems to bring back the video player consistently, solving the black screen every time…

So now I know a fix that seems to work, at least for me. Might be close, maybe it has to do something with UI changes or something. I have very limited coding knowledge but if there’s any settings that affect the shorts UI, either through vanilla settings, A/B or uYou, tinkering with those may help?
