Yeah, that seems... weird.

Hmmm, I suppose it's fundamentally a thread naming issue at heart... maybe some odd Vert.x change that was subsequently fixed? I haven't looked into that possibility yet.

It's still not clear to me which of these applies:

there's something substantively wrong here
our test isn't looking at the right thing (maybe thread name isn't a reliable test here?)
the Vertx thread is doing something weird (like passing this work off under some scenarios)
something else entirely
