Even if we could get it to run it would be unusable... Kodi 17 uses a lot of memory.. around 3-4 GB is used on Windows version of Kodi 17.
Kodi 14.2 on the Boxee uses around 300 MB. I don't think they have made Kodi any better,, more bloat ware if we are totally honest...
The Boxee with its hardware video acceleration enabled thanks the Quarnster packs a mighty punch considering its age.
To be fair, Raspberry Pi3 has only 1GB of RAM and runs Kodi like a dream. But the BBox being locked down makes for a lot of overhead that can't be released to RAM.
That's good to hear your Raspberry Pi3 runs Kodi 17 well with 1 GB, at some point I was looking at getting a new media box for Kodi.
Presently this Boxee is doing well for me...
If the B.B. had ever been cracked, I’d probably still be using both of mine. The fear of them burning out was always high though, as the box never quite dealt with heat correctly.
That said Raspberry Pi’s are good with LibreELEC, but the far superior option is the Odroid C2. It has has the same form factor as the Pi, but trades the Pi’s WiFI and Bluetooth for 2GB of RAM, Gigabit Ethernet and hardware HEVC/x265 decoding. As a longtime former BB user, I’ve thought about creating a tutorial or suggestion guide for replacement hardware and posting it to Boxeed.in.
Unfortunately it can't be, the hardware is just too old. See the release page https://github.com/quasar1/boxeebox-xbmc/releases, "everything seems to work perfectly well but we are stuck on Helix 14.2. No actual Kodi updates are possible I am afraid due to various restrictions (view previous release notes below for more info)."
