Permission? Just go ahead, there is no one you have to ask for permission. And take a look at Guake and Indicator Terminal, for inspiration and code.

I am sure the developers of elementary appreciate your compliment ;). Be aware I am not (yet) one of the them, elementary apps is just a fan-site so to speak.
