They are indeed required to confirm. This is pretty standard, though, but I agree that this might lose some people.
We do indeed need to dress that Newsletter subscription page up some more. Yikes!
I REALLY want to start fixing emails coming from the Hub, as well as little things like this Newsletter subscribe page. Will have to wait until later this semester, I think.
I totally get the need to prioritize and see this as post version 1.0 of the redesign. Posting a couple of ideas here for when we are ready.

I'll check the first issue. I like the second issue you mentioned. Did you try this on dev or on production? Just trying to figure out where you are seeing the subscribe buttons.

I also wonder if user are required to "confirm" their subscription request? It seems like an easy way to loose a lot of people.
