I think we might want to keep it this way (i.e. authors from project). Again, publications are intimately tied to projects. One way to think of this is similar to GitHub. For example, qubeshub is an organization on GitHub (similar to Group on QUBES). This repo is similar to a project on QUBES. A contributor of the repo should be a member of the repo. Similarly, an author of the publication should be a member of the corresponding project. The main exception to this is if the publication was created outside of a project. In that case, I can understand allowing for choosing from a group member when the publication is owned by the group.
currently authors can only be selected from the list of project members
