SURVEILLANCE AND JOB CHOICE IN A GLOBAL TECH ECOSYSTEM

Abstract

We all want to find work that’s a good fit for us. A little more pay, a little less stress, maybe even some stock options? But the work we do in technology can have unexpected impacts on people’s privacy and safety in our globally connected world. And these impacts are often disproportionately felt by LGBTQA+ and other marginalized people. Recent cases have involved translation software that incorrectly handled plural cases, causing asylum claims to be denied and surveillance tech that is being used by governments to track and target LGBTQA+ individuals. We’ll look at how to turn down the more obvious opportunities with dangerous impacts as well as how to look for and safeguard against less obvious risks your work could produce.
