You can also hold down ctrl+click the song to show it in the preview pane a little more easily at the moment :) The mini window there was my attempt at showing a better preview without taking over the preview pane, but it may stay or go (or be changed) depending on user feedback. In that screenshot though the text should be perfectly readable - it's about twice as big as the database song labels! There are other things we can do to make it seem more "permanent" and less like a bug though, if that's the main issue.
I'm very reluctant to just show the preview in the preview pane when a song is clicked on the database window by default however - this fundamentally changes the "flow" of items from the database to the schedule to the preview pane at present, and means if someone selects an item in the database accidentally then it's all too easy to accidentally send the wrong item live. This has been suggested once long ago, but there were also a couple of people that rightly pointed out they didn't want it implemented like this for the same reason as above.
We could have an option, but that seems like a bit of a cop out - we ideally need this implemented in a way that suits everyone.

Did you consider this alternative: click the song and immediately display this song full in the preview pane. Currently one has to right click the song and the choose Preview song to get the song fully in the Preview pane. I would value this option instead of a pre-preview. It will speed up the composing of the order of service. It would also be a way to scroll quickly through the song db and watch the complete songs displayed in the preview pane.
What I like about the current GUI of Quelea is it's static lay-out. The opague windows pops up and disappers dynamically (first I thought it was a bug) and is in that sense a little disturbing or abnormal.

That would indeed be an undesirable flow change for some people. Not for our congregation, by the way:
