I confirm this bug has not already been reported

Describe the bug A clear and concise description of what the bug is.

Some Linux distros give edition_<distro> | fmt -w 80: command not found

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Run quickemu with arguments '...' Run quickget with any Linux distros.
    quickget debian 12.6.0
    quickget fedora 40

    Most of Linux distro will return error. Tried wih Mint, Fedora and Mint. Xubuntu, macOS and Windows works.

  2. See error

Expected behavior A clear and concise description of what you expected to happen. Get ISO image of Linux distro and configurations.

Quickemu output Run quickemu or quickemu and include the output of the failure below:

Maybe docs needs updating. I fixed this by listing available images using quickget --list hence it will be quickget fedora 40 Workstation

flexiondotorg commented 3 months ago

fmt is part of coreutils.

I don't understand why fmt would be absent from an Arch Linux install.

kaanchinar commented 3 months ago

Thanks for your replies!

First of all, @bkamau beside updating docs, it is a bug/visual error stuff. For example when I don't specify my release, script returns ERROR! You must specify a release. message as normal behavior. Unfortunately, without specifying "Edition" of OS, program returns ERROR! You must specify an edition. as excepted, but editions tab is empty, and the fmt command not found error appears. Here is the example screenshot: image

@flexiondotorg Arch comes with fmt package out of the box. Output of fmt --version command is that:

fmt (GNU coreutils) 9.5
Copyright (C) 2024 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later <https://gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html>.

@flexiondotorg He clearly has fmt from coreutils but not "editions_linuxmint | fmt -w 80" , as in and executable named editions_linuxmint\ |\ fmt\ -w\ 80 I think some careful study of line 3510 and following will reveal the quoting oops or similar in this area

        EDITIONS=("$(editions_"${OS}")")
        if [ -n "${3}" ]; then
            EDITION="${3}"
            if [[ ! "${EDITIONS[*]}" = *"${EDITION}"* ]]; then
                echo -e "ERROR! ${EDITION} is not a supported $(pretty_name "${OS}") edition\n"
                echo -n ' - Supported editions: '
                for EDITION in "${EDITIONS[@]}"; do
                    echo -n "${EDITION} "
                done
                echo ""
                exit 1
            fi
        else
            show_os_info "${OS}"
            echo -e " - Editions:\t$("editions_${OS} | fmt -w 80")"  # <- Here be Dragons
            echo -e "\nERROR! You must specify an edition."
            exit 1
        fi

I think we just need to lose the middle pair on line 3524 (which makes no difference to me on Ubuntu Mate but I suspect some subtle bash variation between us and Arch (or this specific Arch) is causing the escaping/quoting behaviour to be problematic). Could be the difference between echo and /usr/bin/echo too.

@kaanchinar Can you please try the following patch and see if it works for you:

diff --git a/quickget b/quickget
index fe02a90..a14cc16 100755
--- a/quickget
+++ b/quickget
@@ -3521,7 +3521,7 @@ if [ -n "${2}" ]; then
             fi
         else
             show_os_info "${OS}"
-            echo -e " - Editions:\t$("editions_${OS} | fmt -w 80")"
+            echo -e " - Editions:\t$(editions_${OS} | fmt -w 80)"
             echo -e "\nERROR! You must specify an edition."
             exit 1
         fi

And could you also provide the output of the following on your system:

command -v echo
which echo
$(which echo) --version | grep echo
command -v bash
bash --version | grep bash
philclifford commented 3 months ago

Hmm - while looking at #1396 I managed to get a similar error:

 ./quickget sparkylinux 7.4.1

SparkyLinux
 - Credentials: -
 - Website: https://sparkylinux.org/
 - Description: Fast, lightweight and fully customizable operating system which offers several versions for different use cases.
./quickget: line 3529: editions_sparkylinux | fmt -w 80: command not found
 - Editions:

ERROR! You must specify an edition.

So it looks like it is more a function of input and code rather than OS/software differences. In case it helps here's my draft change that made the "command not found" error appear:

function releases_sparkylinux() {
    #shellcheck disable=SC2046,SC2005
    echo $(web_pipe "https://sparkylinux.org/download/stable/" |  grep -E -o "sparkylinux-.*\.iso" | cut -d- -f2 | sort -ru)
}

function editions_sparkylinux() {
    #shellcheck disable=SC2046,SC2005
    if [ -z ${RELEASE} ]; then
        echo $(web_pipe "https://sparkylinux.org/download/stable/" | grep -E -o "sparkylinux-.*\.iso" | cut -d- -f4 | cut -d. -f1 | sort -u)
    else
        echo $(web_pipe "https://sparkylinux.org/download/stable/" | grep -E -o "sparkylinux-${RELEASE}-.*\.iso" | cut -d- -f4 | cut -d. -f1 | sort -u)
    fi

}
philclifford commented 3 months ago

@kaanchinar I have reproduced your issue so the info I requested is probably not needed. @flexiondotorg the command not found behaviour seems consistent if you provide OS and release where an edition is omitted :

 ./quickget fedora 40

Fedora
 - Credentials: -
 - Website: https://www.fedoraproject.org/
 - Description: Innovative platform for hardware, clouds, and containers, built with love by you.
./quickget: line 3529: editions_fedora | fmt -w 80: command not found
 - Editions:

ERROR! You must specify an edition.

I think my intuition is still right: bash is looking for 'editions_fedora | fmt -w 80' And takng out the middle quotes seems to fix it.
