[Bug]: Crashes several times daily #2933

Closed accordionnoir closed 1 month ago

accordionnoir commented 1 year ago

Before submitting your bug report, please confirm you have completed the following steps

Bug description

QS says it's updated to 2.4.0 (4039), but it's been crashing every day, making it hard to use.

I'm not sure why it happens. I try to evoke QS and it has crashed.

Steps to reproduce

This won't be helpful. But it's all I know now:

  1. Open QS
  2. It works fine
  3. Try to evoke it after a while
  4. It doesn't appear to work
  5. Open QS with Spotlight
  6. File crash reports from popup windows
  7. This happens several times a day.

Expected behavior

QS doesn't crash as often?

Thanks for creating the issue and providing the contextual details!

If I remember from your email, you didn't recall any specific OS upgrades, QS upgrades, or changes to your plugins around the time this issue started. Does that sound correct?

accordionnoir commented 1 year ago

No, I don't remember changing anything, but I'm not sure.

Recently QS and the Finder crashed at the same time. That was unusual.

n8henrie commented 1 year ago

Can you run from the Terminal and post any output that you see (once a crash occurs)?

  1. Open Terminal.app (on MacOS 13 it's at /System/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
  2. Run /Applications/Quicksilver.app/Contents/MacOS/Quicksilver +
  3. Quicksilver should launch
  4. Leave the Terminal window open. Once a crash occurs, see if there's any text to post here.

EDIT: You might need a debug build for this, but I think even a release build will have some output.

accordionnoir commented 1 year ago

I did this. I'll past the text. It seems to show errors right when QS opens. But the app keeps running for a while and is usable. It only stops working a while later. I don't know if this shows that later crash:

Daily crashes on 2.4.0 as well.

Trying the above debug, had a permissions request for Accessibility. Fixed that. Waiting to see.. Been crashing for a few weeks.

Spoke with @pjrobertson about this today -- I'm still learning and will continue to look into it.

He mentioned that a bandaid for now many be to disable Catalog -> Applications -> Running Applications & Processes. Can you try that and confirm that the crash stops?

accordionnoir commented 1 year ago

I've disabled that. We'll see what happens. Thanks so much for working on this! Much appreciated.

pagliere commented 1 year ago

This has been a multiple-times-a-day problem for at least a couple of months. Usually I notice that Quicksilver has disappeared when I open up my Mac after it has been asleep for a short (or long) time. I have sent in reports and I have sent in the crash output after starting it in the terminal. I hope there is some progress on this mystery. I just today turned off the Catalog->Running Applications & Processes. No crash yet, but the day is young. Fingers virtually crossed.

tangoTH commented 1 year ago

Seems to be stable at the moment although I still have Catalog > Running Applications.

Upgraded to Ventura - 13.0.1

tangoTH commented 1 year ago

Still stable a week later

n8henrie commented 1 year ago

Still stable a week later

That's good news. But is that with or without the change I recommended? Your second-to-last post makes it seem like you didn't change anything?

tangoTH commented 1 year ago

I upgraded to Ventura - 13.0.1 and didn't make the change...

Been stable since the upgrade. But it does sound like pagliere did make the change

pagliere commented 1 year ago

I am still on Monterrey, but It has indeed been stable since I unclicked "Catalog -> Running Applications."

sdmonty commented 1 year ago

adding my voice to this – I am experiencing very similar spontaneous quits (I guess "crashes", but I'm not seeing any "Quicksilver Quit Unexpectedly" pop-ups, the app simply closes in the background)...

QS 2.4.0. (4039) on a MacBook Air M1 Ventura 13.1

Can't confirm that it's Ventura, but I did not see any of this behavior on my MacMini which is still on Monterey (as of last week, before I left home on vacation).

Followed suggestions above (uncheck Catalog > Running Applications & Processes) and the problem persists – particularly when waking machine from Sleep.

Thoughts/suggestions/follow-up welcome...

abstractrealism commented 1 year ago

I'm experiencing the same thing on Monterey. I tried calling it from terminal, and the lines from when it crashed are:

I'll try the Running Applications bandaid and see if that helps. Btw, not sure if this is related or not, and not sure how to reproduce, but QS has been much less responsive than normal lately. When I invoke the search panel and start typing it takes a second or two for characters to appear. There's also quite often a spinning progress wheel in the bottom right of the panel, as if it's busy with something. Please let me know if there's any other info I can provide.

I'm still on Monterrey 12.6, and Ive noticed occasional crashes, but just as, or more annoying, is the incredible lag between invoking QS and having QS accept the keys I'm typing. It winds up actually launching the wrong app because it always seems to have one ready to go when it starts up.... I invoke it and type two or three keys and hit enter. It seems to understand the "return" key and so it launches whatever it had sitting there.

After reading through this thread I used the steps to disable Catalog -> Applications -> Running Applications & Processes.

QS Crashing Stopped: I can confirm that the crashing multiple times a day does stop after disabling the rescan of "Running Applications & Processes!" I also ran the app launched from terminal and observed that many of the update calls that were performed and not working before were in fact stopped and the app now runs quiet in the background with zero crashing. The most problematic machine was my 2017 MacBook Pro i7 on macOS 12.7.3 Monterey.

Also resolved - as mentioned by users having experienced a slowed-down or delayed responsiveness in QS during normal calls to launch an app or find a file have now also stopped. It would seem the background process to tell the catalog to scan active apps might have been the catch-all for these crashes in QS. I'm just glad that having crashes multiple times a day is now over after more than a year struggling with this issue.

I have had “Running Applications and Processes” disabled since I can’t remember when. Though QS doesn’t crash like it used to, it can still take its time coming up with the app or file that I’ve entered the first few letters of or even the default value.

I still use QS and love it despite its grogginess.
