maybe display the list of letters from where you want to start the visual selection identical to how it is done with vim-easymode reference : https://github.com/easymotion/vim-easymotion

Also see https://github.com/qutebrowser/qutebrowser/issues/1453 - but this would probably be a better fit for the extension rather than in the core indeed.
