Current yellow smile icon could be disturbing for some users.

Ideal icon would reflect (indicate) current status of the web page - interactive or inactive (wallpaper).

Menu bar icon should have glyph option as default.

"Disturbing" is a stretch, but it certainly is pretty ugly and does not abide to the Apple design guidelines.
