Labels on Points or Polygons on the Maps #97

What new feature would you like to see implemented? How will you use it?

Hello! Love this tool, but please, please, please, can you enable data labels
to be displayed on regions on an intensity map? Also, the option to export as
an image file would be great too!

Thanks,

Paul

From issue 119:
Reported by joegawron@boisestate.edu, Nov 12, 2010

What new feature would you like to see implemented? How will you use it?

Add the ability to use values from a specified (e.g. name) column as labels on
map markers. I can't find this in the styles, and I don't see it in the
existing requests.

Usage? Suppose I have a basemap table showing building footprints using KML.
Also, the table contains a variety of point features for those buildings.
Right now, the viewer has to click on the footprint, or point to know what it
is. I would like to simplify that user choice (of clicking) by labeling (or
not) each point (or polygon) with my choice of field name.

Example: Building A, with three additional features. Click on the footprint,
get a info window with a picture, the name of the building, other attributes.
But, until I click, I don't know the name of the building. Now suppose the
building is a parking garage, and I want to know if it's full. I have
conveniently placed a marker on it, and the info window will display current
capacity from an external link. But, I need to know which feature marker to
click, so I want a label to know that marker is the capacity display.

Hello there,

Labeling and showing tooltips of the region, line or point features when
overlying a fusion table layer to the map would be one of the most important
improvements to the existing functionalities. Ideally some kind of flexibility
such as customizing the label and tooltips (HTML) would be more appreciated.

Regards,

Nedim

I need this feature for polygon definition - soils polygons need to have a
symbol

An option for displaying tooltips, and/or visible labels on a map, for both
points and polygons, is very much needed.

IMHO. the priority for this issue should be higher than "Medium".

Thanks!

P.S.: GFT so totally rocks!

Expanding the KML subset supported by Fusion Tables might make this happen
'cheaply'.

Specifically, the KML API documentation shows the <Placemark> and <name>
elements as supported in the Maps API, so if those elements were supported in
the 'Location' data class of Fusion Table data, perhaps the Maps engine could
just grab it and display it with normal Google Maps text defaults.

Two feature requests:

1. Can you add a feature to be able to take Text from a column in the table and
place it next to the icon on the map.

2. Can you add a feature that will change the icon based on conditional
formatting. ie. red if between 80-100, blue between 50-80, yellow under 50,
with the numbers being limits that can be set.

Otherwise it is a GREAT tool.

I'm not sure if this would be associated with this Feature Request, but it
would be very nice to have ~no~ icon and just text next to a 'point'
geographical location - could be useful for info such as elevation and
addresses. Cheers.

Please support Point/Area labels the way Google Earth does.

A point with a no_icon style (null style elements) just displays text centered
on the point.

I'd guess you would need two new attributes: labelText and size (maybe in
relative units as in HTML)

A related enhancement would be min/max height for visibility - details at high
zoom (low heights), Overview at lower zoom (heights)

When I use a KML link from Fusion into Google Earth I need a way of not
displaying the labels. I am sometimes viewing 1000s of points and with the
labels it just looks like a mess with no idea what is going on.

Needs the ability to set size and opacity or just tern the labels on and off.

Thanks for everything.

The KML link uses the first column as the placemark label. Try creating an
empty first column and see if that works for you.

16 months and still no update? I really need the tooltip in maps for Fusion
Tables. When you hover over a marker, it should display a specific column
(i.e. Name).

Status: Acknowledged

The tutorials and 'solutions' to which some people have gone to, to get labels
onto their maps is laughably complex. Involving several phases and tools to get
a desired result. If FT are experimental, why is it so slow be modified? Lets
have some experimental labels. You should be able to designate a column from
your table to be a label. Then allow for it to be styled - just like we can
'change info window' style.

Hey all -

Fusion Tables uses a server-side map rendering technology that doesn't have any
inherent support for labels or rollovers, unlike the technologies you see in
Google Earth and other Google Maps stuff. So this isn't a simple change.

Since I don't see this on our roadmap and don't wish to string people along,
I'm going to change the status to Not Feasible. Please seek out alternatives
if this is a required feature for your maps.

You might, for example, use the JSONP sample code to grab the data from your
Fusion Table and use it with the appropriate Google Maps API features for
labels.

Best,

-Rebecca

Question - if FT doesn't have any inherent support for rollovers, then why
does the cursor pointer change when you roll over markers, polygons, etc.?

Original comment by jfmcneir...@gmail.com on 13 Dec 2012 at 5:08

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
The cursor change indicates there is a clickable target at that spot (a
function of the browser) - in the FT case a click will display the info pane.

Original comment by rheitz...@gmail.com on 13 Dec 2012 at 3:51

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Yes, but how does the browser know there's a clickable spot? Because FT
provides information that the browser uses to register a mouseover event,
which when fired, makes the browser change the mouse cursor.

FT also provides information that the browser uses to register a click
event, which when fired, makes the browser interact with FT to obtain
additional information to be displayed in the infowindow, and/or be
returned in a FusionTablesMouseEvent object when the Maps Javascript API is
used.

So, why can't FT (and/or the Maps JavaScript API) be enhanced to do
something else when the mouseover event is fired, in addition to having the
browser change the mouse cursor? Perhaps it could make the browser
interact with FT to obtain additional information to be displayed in
something like a tool-tip, and/or be returned in a FusionTablesMouseEvent
object?

It's very disappointing that this issue is now classified as Not-Feasable. To
my way of thinking that means the matter is now closed.
Labelling (or labeling) regions is an essential aspect of cartography, and
should be considered critical if we are going to produce information which
lay-people can understand.
I accept that this is not going to be straight forward, but please do not
abandon this request.

This library may work for some:
https://code.google.com/p/google-maps-utility-library-v3/wiki/Libraries

Note that FT is not a mapping application - it provides tables with spatial
attributes. The resource you use to visualize the data would need to provide
labels.

Labeling is very difficult in dynamic maps. Note that Google Maps API doesn't
provide a label object. Google Earth tries but is less than perfect.

I agree this request is not feasible in FT.

Providing a label to a placemark provides significant value to Fusion Tables.
Without it, many uses are lost. BatchGeo now provides this ability. It is NOT
not feasible.
