Follow a WP post's discussion #34

Hello Ray, not sure if this would be possible to achieve with this plugin:

Basically I would like users to be able to follow a discussion on a normal blog post (also CPT!!!) by pressing a button, similar to the new "Watch this Ticket" button on core.trac.wordpress.org. Then they get a notification (email or not) and it's shown in their "following" activity or notifications when:

  1. post (CPT) gets edited/updated
  2. new comments are added

Or is there a similar plugin/functionality already doing this. I have not used BP for over 2 years, so I do not know how much has changed.

Maybe it's more of a notification components thing. Not sure. Thanks, Sascha

The plugin at the moment only follows users, not posts.

I actually think you are right that this should be a notification plugin. There are probably a bunch of other plugins out there that handle post subscription on wordpress.org/plugins/.

Had a quick look, but nothing springs out that would also send a notification via buddypress or show something in the activity. Most just do an email notification. Maybe I come back to it later, once I am a bit more familiar with BuddyPress and see if your follow plugin could be adapted or made into a new one solely for post follow/discussion follow.

Thanks anyway, Sascha

When I was referring to a third-party plugin, I was referring to a plugin that allows you to subscribe to a post's comments via email. I didn't say that BuddyPress support would be included! ;)

Adding in BuddyPress support to such a plugin should be handled by those plugins and not this one.

That sounds like a good idea to adapt an existing plugin and make it post/add items to the activity stream and notifications. As said, not too familiar with BuddyPress. Will look into this though soon.
