Open hturner opened 1 year ago
@mcnanton and @paocorrales prepared a lightning talk for https://latin-r.com: "Convertite en R Contributor: aportando traducciones a R base". The will also have a space for people to work on translations (Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese) during the conference.
@beatrizmilz, @rmhirota, @yabellini, @hsvab, @clente, and @PedroPark9 have prepared a set of slides to show the ongoing projects to translate content about R to Brazilian Portuguese (not just in base R). Anyone can use when they need, and is welcome to contribute: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1uqsPo715R_r0u6wPyC3EBbUVkri0qjf7SV5Y-zTfTZ0/edit#slide=id.gc6f9e470d_0_0.
I've created a markdown file at https://github.com/r-devel/rcwg/tree/main/shared_materials where we can link to materials people are happy to share, such as the pt_BR talk.
Hi Heather! I'm sorry I'm so late! I just saw this today.
Awesome ideas! I liked that there is a list of online meetups and events we can propose to present to.
More possibilities:
In R-Ladies São Paulo, we plan to do a in-person "Translation event" in the first semester of 2024, like in Latin-R back in 2022 (it was online, and we called it "translatón"). The idea is to show the possibilities of working on translation projects and how to start contributing. Then, we can separate them into smaller groups, depending on which translation they want to work on. @clente @rmhirota It will be awesome if we can have your inputs on the ideas for the event, and also your participation! We have yet to set a date, so we can also think of something that works for you.
This structure was inspired by an event that I attended back in 2019, the "tidyverse developer day". It was a great experience for me to start learning how to contribute to R packages. Having people who already know the process and are willing to help was really important!
We used this structure in the Open Data Day organized by R-Ladies SP this year, and it worked so well!
I wrote all this to say we can try other events if they work well. Or even try to do some sessions online. The idea is to work collaboratively and have people help with questions!
About conecta_r: The page shows two dates: 1-3/feb/2024 (in the text) and 1-2/march/2024 (in the images). @malfaro2 Do you know what are the actual dates for the event?
@beatrizmilz rOpenSci actually had a Community Call on multilingual publishing: https://ropensci.org/multilingual-publishing/ - this did not cover contributions to base R, but focused on rOpenSci products (e.g. their package development guide) and the project to enable internationalization of R package help files. Probably contribution to base R is a bit out of scope for their community calls.
ConectaR have now opened registration and call for abstracts. The dates are 8-9 March and it will be an online in person conference in Costa Rica: https://congresos.ucr.ac.cr/event/7.
Probably contribution to base R is a bit out of scope for their community calls.
We were thinking of a Comm Call for this year on different projects and development for translating things in R, so translation to base R would be in the scope. :-)
I was hopping to be able to show case the data.table translations too
Suggestion from the September RCWG meeting:
Translation team leaders and others involved in supporting translations could collaborate on a presentation about the translation guidelines and Weblate that could be presented at different events, e.g.
The idea would be to reach a wide audience, particularly among speakers of languages where there is a lot of translation work to do.
