The current site seems to need some SEO work, among other things.

Yeah I think it probably needs a total do-over.

It would be great if we could do something markdown based. I'd say GitHub Pages, but the fact that there's still no way to natively use GH Pages with a custom domain and HTTPS makes that less attractive.

Perhaps we could still do a Jekyll static site, deploy somewhere free and easy like Netlify?

+1 to all of that basically. Markdown editing would be great, and I recently used netlify for the first time and was super impressed with how easy it is.

Started poking at Jekyll for static site generation (which is what GitHub Pages uses), found a basic theme, tweaked a bit, created a copy of the visible content on the WordPress site, and deployed to GitHub pages at https://rabblerouser.github.io as an initial test (trivial to build with Jekyll and deploy elsewhere such as Netlify).
