Steps and tips to translate Radiant #27

Open wrprates opened 7 years ago

Hi @vnijs . First of all, thanks for Radiant, it's being an awesome tool for teaching data analytics and data visualization.

We intend to translate Radiant to portuguese. Do you have some tips or steps that we can follow to translate from the source-code, like the path for the main files, etc?

Thanks, best regards. Wlademir.

vnijs commented 7 years ago

That sounds like a challenge! I expect the first thing you would want to do is translate the documentation at https://github.com/radiant-rstats/docs. This is actually the base for all documentation in Radiant. Documentation shown in the app for radiant.data is located in data/app. Documentation shown in the app for radiant.design is located in design/app. etc.

I'm not sure what the best way to organize this is but it might be best if I setup a radiant-rstats/docs.portuguese repo for you.

Guys,

I can give a hand on this, it would be a great contribution to Brazilian students. My limitation is time and the learning curve with R and Github, however if Vincent can create a repo and give some instructions I go afterwards.

Greetings and happy stats!

I made a repo for the documentation in Portuguese (see link below). I gave @wrprates admin right and @joniarroba write privileges as well.

https://github.com/radiant-rstats/docs.portuguese

The place to start would be data/app. Edit the .md files. If there is both an .Rmd and .md file edit only the .Rmd file as it will create the .md file.

Dear Vincent, sorry for the long delay. Things are very busy on daily bases. I found this very nice project made for collaborative software translation - https://weblate.org/en/ - As I also collaborate on OpenRefine project, I had the experience to make the English to Portuguese translation and it is going to be attached to the next version. It would be a bit help to make Radiant more internationalized. Let me know your thoughts on this!

Cheers!

I'm certainly open to that idea @joniarroba. I (re)created the docs.portuguese repo and sent you and @wrprates invitations with admin privileges. If you are able/willing to translate the docs I think it should also be possible to build custom versions of Radiant with the portuguese documentation included.\

Please also see https://radiant-rstats.github.io/docs/news.html for information on (breaking) changes coming up soon and how to install the development version of radiant. Please test it out.

Dear @vnijs I have worked a bit as initial translations of the portuguese version, now I am getting used with the structure. I also invited some friends of the R community in Florianópolis to give a hand too, let´s see how it goes. I added my email in the contact for questions regarding translation issues and where you mention "in case you would like to use radiant contact me" I translated as contact Vincent in English this email - your email. Any issues let me know.

Nice! I forgot to tell you that the "_editable" md and Rmd files in the sub/ directory are re-used in several other documents on the site. Those should be some of the first to edit most likely.

@joniarroba and @wrprates Could you do me a favor and try out the latest version of radiant? I had to make some changes to radiant.data to replace special characters such as curly quotes, bullets etc. that users might copy-and-paste from Word or a PDF file (see SO link below). I'd like to know if the changes affect report generation in other locales (e.g., Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, etc.). You can get the latest version of radiant using the code below.

install.packages("radiant.update", repos = "https://radiant-rstats.github.io/minicran/")
radiant.update::radiant.update()

Dear @vnijs, thanks for the message. And sorry for the delay.

I installed the new version on linux Ubuntu and everything is looking good. Previously I had problems with characters such as "ç, é, á" and spaces in the dataset headers. So far it is working great with the initial testes. If I face new problems I let you know. The platform if becoming very robust.

Cheers.

vnijs commented 5 years ago

Thanks. The main problem OS is windows however. Any chance you could test on that platform as well?
