Include birefringence in thermal simulations #22

Birefringence, and especially that induced by temperature variations, can affect the beam polarization.

This is lower priority than implementation of the nonlinear heat equation. We may drop this task.

This is out-of-scope for this project. Would be a good task for the Phase 2a/2b proposal.
