Expand library of VLM modules #161

From GMD manuscript:

The existing VLM modules assume a constant-rate trend into the future. While perhaps the best assumption that can be undertaken at a global scale, more refined approaches might be possible at a local scale. For example, in many regions, VLM is driven in part by highly-localised subsidence associated with anthropogenic interventions, such as fluid withdrawal and/or surface loading (Shirzaei et al., 2021). Indeed, in the regions of the world experiencing the fastest rates of RSL rise, these currently tend to be the largest drivers. In such cases, assumption of a constant-rate trend in future may not be the most suitable assumption. A module capable of representing alternative scenarios of such factors could be helpful in assessments in such regions (e.g., Minderhoud et al., 2020).

Victor Malagon Santos is working on this in the context of PROTECT.

For v1.2, we are probably talking about simply a more flexible version of kopp14/vlm, not a dynamic model.

@victor-malagon What is the status of the VLM module?

victor-malagon commented 2 months ago

@bobkopp we have produced two workflows in PROTECT for VLM: one with only GIA from Caron et al. (2018), and another merged dataset combining the same GIA projections with trends from other VLM components at coastal locations. Julius Oelsmann has produced the latter. I adapted the existing VLM module to load and project those trends for our PROTECT projections. The module can be found here:

https://github.com/victor-malagon/facts/tree/GIA

However, Julius and I needed to make some adjustment to the data, and I will be updating the module and the data soon. I am planning to finish this in mid September.

@bobkopp the VLM/GIA module is done, but need to discuss with Julius what rights we have to share that data before releasing it with FACTS and making it public. I'll keep you updated on this.
