Android merge #184

If I'm not mistaken, we agreed that before merging new stuff into the client code, we would merge the Android branch back into mainline. As 1.9.6.1 has now been released, it may be time to do this, so we can move on. I'm willing to try and take a stab at merging the Android branch, but I'm not sure if anyone is already working on this. Also, I'm not all that familiar with the Android branch yet, so if there are any pitfalls to be aware of, I'd appreciate a warning before I start.

Thoughts anyone? @pjbroad ?

I'd rather do it myself as I know what's involved. Its on my to-do list.
