It may be difficult to auto-detect this accurately, but it would be nice to 
maybe
have a list of events/timestamps in a config file that would then be displayed
somewhere over the code swarm.

Yes, having a list of dates with a manually given comment (in the config file) 
would be nice.

Something like

SpecialDate20100606 = "The community launches an educational book"
SpecialDate20100801 = "Project published in The New York Times"

or that kind of stuff.

Changing the bug report to enhancement request.
