@ohminimarie just checking if you would like to help with this too, since the June workshop is a bit later
Was this an amazing success?? Should we close it out??
:tent:
Yes, this was an amazing success - we raised over $25K! Here is the official Galvanize post that covers it: http://www.galvanize.it/blog/2014/4/21/5uzk08lr2sjjlmfrwxmnzyanz6q12r
This is SF focused, but we'll raise funds for RailsBridge in general
Stuff to do
Background
Our partnership with Galvanize around the Vail Ski Challenge has a deadline for matching funds around April 10th* -- with those matching funds we could raise $13,800 for RailsBridge, which is close to our annual budget for last year (not including in-kind donations). Their event coordinator, Bru Maia and I cooked up an idea to have a fundraising event -- something non-skiing that would be related to what RailsBridge and Galvanize actually do.. They just opened a San Francisco space which has a lovely 200 seat theater. We've tentatively reserved it for April 7 and 8th, and we could pick either one. It's only 3 weeks lead time, but I think we can pull it off and scale the event to match whatever we can do. We could even have a VIP dinner before the event in the space next to the theater.
I thought it would be neat to have a speaker who is an inspiring woman leader, and I reached out to Judith Estrin, who is one of the engineers who helped invent the Internet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Estrin and she said she would be willing! I was thinking she could talk about what it was like in the early days -- before the internet, working on TCP/IP, and her first software engineering job and maybe her first startup or what it was like to be CTO of Cisco in the late 90s.
I would love some help! Two things: 1) feedback on the event format and how to get the word out -- not a big time commitment, maybe a couple of phone calls and/or sending email, doing some google searches on where we should announce the event (we'll also have help from Galvanize on the latter) 2) help with logistics either in advance or the evening of the event
Also if there are reasons we should pick April 7th or April 8th -- is there some community event I'm forgetting?
