July 25-26 SF Rails Workshop #24

Feel free to comment below if you can help out with this workshop! We need:

Update: we have one of two organizers: @jennielees! :tada:

Once we have the cast of characters, we can:

:fish:

jennielees commented 10 years ago

I can help organise! (Unfortunately I can't make the workparty on May 18th though. Boo.)

rachelmyers commented 10 years ago

Is this for a second July workshop, in addition to https://github.com/railsbridge/organizing/issues/15??

sidhene commented 10 years ago

Augh. I am still getting used to GitHub and had a filter on that only showed me issues with certain tags. Not only did I not see the July workshop thread, I thought we didn't have one.

Rachel, I see the August workshop is the anniversary one Sarah is organizing. Does this mean the next workshop needing an organizer is September?

Alternately, how popular have the front end workshops been? Would it make sense to do one in July if Jennie wants to organize?

The front end workshops are super popular, and I think Zee can help with a sponsor and host if we want to do two in July.

The September workshop (https://github.com/railsbridge/organizing/issues/21) doesn't have a sponsor lined up.

rachelmyers commented 10 years ago

@zspencer In case you haven't seen this thread. :surfer:

sidhene commented 10 years ago

Jennie? Would you like to do a front-end workshop in July? The date will probably depend on you and the venue host.

Sure, I can do that. :)

rachelmyers commented 10 years ago

I edited the top post for this workshop, just so it wouldn't say 'placeholder'. Definitely edit it to whatever it should say.

zspencer commented 10 years ago

@sidhene optimizely is chomping at the bit to host a railsbridge; I'll put you two in contact.

sidhene commented 10 years ago

Splendid!

Did this workshop get a sponsor? Is there anything it needs help with?

sidhene commented 10 years ago

I gather Jennie is the organizer, waiting for a co-organizer. Optimizely is the space sponsor. I'll reach out to Jennie to confirm she can do this (and hopefully handle the confirmation with Optimizely). I expect we'll find a co-organizer for July at the work party

jennielees commented 10 years ago

I didn't realise the organizers were already set for the front-end workshop. I can wait til September, if that's the dealio. :)

sidhene commented 10 years ago

We have other kinds of workshops besides just the front end - DevOps and the original intro to Ruby, for example. If you're still interested in July, you could organize an additional July workshop in one of those formats.

Oh, I wonder if #15 actually changed from a Rails workshop to a front-end one? Because I think the reason I was signed up for a front-end one in the first place was that there was already a stealth July Rails one.

Anyway; I don't mind specifically. Is the Intro to Ruby separate from the Ruby+Rails one? I don't see a DevOps curriculum, and haven't been to that one; how does it work? I've been doing more DevOps stuff lately so that would be pretty interesting! :)

sidhene commented 10 years ago

Yes, the intro to ruby class is the original. Like this: http://www.bridgetroll.org/events/87

It is two days. I am not sure what the DevOps workshop involves, but (speaking from experience) it is not necessary to know anything about the content to do the organizer job. The organizer handles people and logistics. Curriculum is handled by the instructors.

Another event we need an organizer for is a Bridgetroll installfest. Right now, you pretty much have to be a professional Ruby developer to contribute to Bridgetroll, because the dev environment is so difficult to set up. We would like to make it easier, so that students would have the opportunity to gain real life dev experience by contributing to BridgeTroll.

I could do that one too. Which is more needed? Would you - or another veteran - be available to lead organize since I'm a newbie? If so, let's go with whichever you want to do. On May 15, 2014 8:33 PM, "sidhene" notifications@github.com wrote:

Someone would be available to mentor, and there's plenty of support available on the volslist (https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/railsbridge-workshops), but what we need right now is someone to serve as the lead organizer.

You can always delegate responsibilities (I generally do) but the starting point is to have someone take ownership for making this happen since the core vols are too overwhelmed to do it.

WHOmentorsdotcom commented 10 years ago

I am available to organize and WHOmentors.com, Inc. can be the venue sponsor, 365 Vermont, One Hallidie Plaza, and/or 28 2nd Street (2nd & 3rd Floor) for a Friday evening and Saturday morning.

chrisbrickey commented 10 years ago

Volunteering to organize or assist, too

chrisbrickey commented 10 years ago

Take that back....looks like I'll be out of town most of July. Happy to help with anything that can be done remotely.

sidhene commented 10 years ago

@jennielees - are you still on board for July? I'm at Women who Code and just made a big "come organize/teach at Railsbridge" announcement.

Also - did you want to shadow me at the June 13/14 Queer Women's workshop? It's not been announced or posted on the main Bridgetroll page, but it is definitely happening

jennielees commented 10 years ago

@sidhene I'm still available. I'm just not sure what I need to do! :-)

I should be free next weekend, so I could shadow you! Is the workshop in SF?

sidhene commented 10 years ago

Yes, it is! That would be good, because your workshop is the next month. Go on over to the secret event page http://www.bridgetroll.org/events/100 and sign up as a volunteer!

From #15 it looks like @elenawalom wants to help a Ruby specific workshop. Perhaps she can take this one and I'll help with the FE one?

BTW, sorry I missed the Queer Railsbridge, I had to work late on Fri and through the whole weekend -- though I really wish I could've been there to learn and to be an ally. :(

rachelmyers commented 10 years ago

I think this didn't happen. Is the plan to move this workshop or just to close it?

lilliealbert commented 10 years ago

I'm going to close this issue — @chrisbrickey & @jennielees, we'd be exited to have your help with a future workshop if you're up for it.
