Early February SF Javascript RailsBridge Workshop for Women at Dev Bootcamp #50

Closed raorao closed 9 years ago

raorao commented 9 years ago

Hey everyone! So @EmFoley and I are interested in hosting a railsbridge early next year. We're still getting the details together, but we're hoping for one of the first weekends in february. And we also want to write some new JS Curriculum!

Any help / advice / suggestions would be appreciated!

ruchikakumar commented 9 years ago

Thats great! Thank you! We have a potential already for Feb 7th (first Saturday, to be confirmed) - do you think you may be able to do last weekend of Jan?! If not Feb 21st? Thanks again! Ps Iim the new helper

raorao commented 9 years ago

I'm a little scared about the last weekend in january (that's the superbowl and a bad weekend for Dev Bootcamp). We're still negotiating dates, though! are there any other conflicts we should know about?

aneyzberg commented 9 years ago

@raorao and @EmFoley, once you guys get a date down, let me know what help you need on the organizing front :)

ruchikakumar commented 9 years ago

Ah good call, I'm keeping a calendar on weekends - ill note the superbowl, thought Its a Sunday so should be Ok for a workshop if not this one... The 7th may still be available - if this is your preference let me know and then also an alternate back up date. as an FYI - the 14th is possible - its Valentines day though so not sure how people would perceive that.

I'm meeting with Rachel on Monday and can get more info on writing new curriculum... do you have any more info on what you have in mind?

EmFoley commented 9 years ago

Hi there,

This is Emily, Rao's co-organizer- so we talked it over with Dev Bootcamp and February 7th is the only date they will be able to hold the event. I agree with you that Valentine's Day would probably be a big problem for turnout anyway!

Shall we put the 7th down on the calendar?

We're gearing up to start getting the word out this week, particularly making sure women's coding groups are well informed in advance. Really looking forward to having a strong turnout and a great event!

Cheers,

Emily

Wonderful! Yes. Let's! I'll mark it as booked And let's start organizing. Looping in Celeste who will be your poc on all venue related things and Anna who can support organizing the help/teachers.

You guys have hosted before though so should be smooth!

Will you be developing the new JS curriculum to use?

Excited. Ruchika

Hi Ruchika, Celeste, and Anna,

Terrific! And yes, we will be developing the curriculum- Rao primarily, as he is a JavaScript developer and a former Dev Bootcamp instructor. We have a rough outline already of the beginner, intermediate and advanced materials.

Question particular to Anna- to clarify, are you assisting in recruiting teachers/volunteers in advance, or more on day-of logistics?

Thanks very much!

Cheers,

Emily

@EmFoley I am generally here for support/help in all things related to organizing/logistics for the day-of-workshop - to ensure the day-of runs smoothly. So any of the questions/help you need while organizing, for example involving venue layout for classrooms, how many students to have, questions about food, opening and closing presentations, schedule for the day etc....however if needed I can help with teacher recruitment/volunteers as well.

Although generally speaking, once an event is posted on BridgeTroll usually it fills with both teachers and volunteers fairly quickly. Also, I did a RailsBridge at Dev Bootcamp not too long ago so I know that particular venue pretty well.

So feel free to reach out about any questions you have. If you would like, we can schedule an initial call at some point to discuss general workshop details if that would be helpful. I'm excited about a JavaScript workshop happening!

EmFoley commented 9 years ago

Hi Anna,

Awesome, happy to be working with you! Also, you're right, I have definitely noticed the draw once something is posted on BridgeTroll :).

We should definitely connect on details- I'll reach out to you in early-mid January, I think that would be about the right time.

Thank you again and look forward to speaking soon!

Cheers,

Emily

Hey @EmFoley & @raorao, have you considered using Bridge Troll for RSVPs? It helps us track student & volunteer attendance workshops and has a lot of tools for communicating / breaking people up into small groups / etc.

It looks like you're aware of Bridge Troll's existence (now that I've actually gone back and read through the history ), so now I think my question is mostly about whether you'll be using it for RSVPs and general curiosity about the plan for the new meetup group. :cactus: :cake: :cactus:

aneyzberg commented 9 years ago

Hey @EmFoley - let me know if you need any help with the Bridge Troll site :)

Also @raorao - we have had some people interested in contributing to the javascript curriculum. Would you be open to that? Let me know :)

Hi Anna,

We'd love to use the Bridge Troll site! I'll get working on that right away and get in touch if I have any questions.

lilliealbert commented 9 years ago

It looks like @raorao's PR to update the JS curriculum levels are in, so the only thing left to do before we publish on Bridge Troll is for the language about who is invited to be updated.

@EmFoley, can you ping me once that's up to date?

It would probably make sense to give the people who RSVP'd on Meetup a day's headstart on RSVP-ing before announcing it to the whole RailsBridge SF list, since it'll probably fill up quickly and then the Meetup people would be sad that there wasn't room for them on Bridge Troll.

lilliealbert commented 9 years ago

Language that we've used commonly is:

This workshop is intended to reach out to women who are interested in learning Ruby on Rails. Men are welcome to come if you find a woman who wants to learn Ruby on Rails and come together. RailsBridge is emphatically queer and trans* friendly.

And it's helpful to include "for Women" in the event title for extra clarity

EmFoley commented 9 years ago

Thanks, Lillie- sorry for the delay! Will have those changes up and messages out to the Meetup folks to switch to Bridge Troll today.

Cheers,

Emily

Hey Lillie,

Quick question- I've updated the language on the Bridge Troll page, but wanted to also remove the InstallFest- Rao and I decided against it, but I couldn't find a way to remove a session from the event.

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious! If not, can you let me know how to do that?

As soon as I can remove the Installfest, I'll message the Meetup.com respondees, since I want to remove the possibility of additional confusion over an Installfest.

Thanks so much for your ongoing help with this!

Emily

That's actually not something that's currently changeable via the site (it is before you've saved the event the first time, but not after). I'll jump into a Rails console and remove that for you tonight. (And will follow up when it's done!)

@raorao Hey Rao, The folks at Carbon Five mentioned to me that they want to do a JS curriculum under RailsBridge in Chattanooga. And they were wanting to see the JS curriculum that was developed for the workshop at Dev Bootcamp - but i don't see it up on the RailsBridge site yet. Do you know when we'll get a chance to see the curriculum?

lilliealbert commented 9 years ago

Also, looking at the low number of volunteers so far (6 volunteers for 100 students), I'm worried that we're not going to get enough volunteers if we don't get the curriculum in the public ASAP. @raorao, can you share whatever draft version you have?

(It would probably also be a good idea to schedule an evening of teacher training to review the curriculum before the workshop, but the most important thing is getting the curriculum online soon.)

raorao commented 9 years ago

totally right. I'll push the current version of the curriculum tonight.

just submitted my notes to the listserv.

One last question: I wanted to send one more thank you email to volunteers/students, and I was hoping to include a link to the survey again. Is there anyway to do that? The URLs seem specific to the RSVP.
