This PR is a refactor of the code repo as I understand the code base.
A few new functions are added -- before feature wise it drifts away too much I'd merge this.
__repr__
__str__
`setup.py is deprecated, which means some additional work is needed to get this compile on windows.
extension modules are likely broken too.
