Windows 7 wont connect

What version of wireless tether are you using?

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. start tethering app
2. try to connect using Lenovo ThinkPad window 7 64bit
3. Fails to connect right away.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Being able to connect.

Please provide any additional information below.

The Wifi Tether app works fine on my device with iPhone and Windows XP
laptop however when i try to connect using two recently purchased Lenovo
Windows 7 64Bit laptops (two different models, but have the same Intel NIC)
it fails right away "windows was unable to connect". no other details.
The second attempt it wont fail right away, but it will fail after 1-2
minutes on the same error.

Seems like the N1 hardware and the intel hardware installed on these
laptops wont play nice.
I have the latest drivers on both laptops.

I could not connect from my Win7 box to my new install of WiFi-Tether (could 
not even see WiFi Tether on the Windows machine), so I did not know which 
machine was the cause of the problem.  However, yesterday my daughters MacBook 
connected to internet via WiFi Tether (albeit with some hesitation), so I was 
reasonably confident that problem was with the Win7 box (... or perhaps with 
settings on the WiFi Tether app). So, I changed the channel (on WiFi Tether) 
from the default to Channel Low and behold WiFi Tether bagan working for the 
first time on my Windows machine, and it works great (but as far as I can tell, 
it was not about to work using the channel settings as shipped).  I don't 
remember what channel setting it was on when shipped (Auto? or other??, doh!).  
I just noticed that brianlpowers also obtained similar fix by changing channel!

I have HTC Evo running 2.2 and used UnRevoked3 (Clockwork Mod Recovery).

I couldn't connect through my Win7 laptop using a Realtek RTL8191SE Wireless 
LAN 802.11n card but a quick update to drivers let it use my Motorola XT720 as 
a tether.

Laptop was having intermittent connection before finding this thread.

Confirmed fix with changing channels:

Hardware: 

Motorola Droid A855
Lenovo X200 Windows 7 64-Bit

Modifications:

1. Changed channel on wifi settings in device manager to 10
2. Wifi tethering on droid to channel 10
3. Roaming aggressiveness to Highest
4. 802.11n channel width to auto (this does nothing, side note)

I can't connect with my new Lenovo Thinkpad T510, Windows 7 64-bit. None of the 
fixes discussed above have worked for me. I have the Intel Ultimate-N 6300 
network card. The ad-hoc network is detected, the system can't connect to it - 
it sits at "Attempting to connect..." for several minutes then fails.

The tether DOES work with my older Dell Inspiron lap top with Windows XP. So, 
the phone is rooted, and tether is working fine.

The phone is a Samsung Epic 4G (sprint)

Here are the things I've tried, but have NOT worked:

1. Upgraded to latest intel wireless driver 3.4.0.9 - no effect
2. Change Ad-Hoc channel in driver settings to match the tether channel - no 
effect
3. Varying the other driver settings - no effect
4. Disabling IP6 in the adapter settings - no effect
5. Varying the settings (e.g. access control, enabling encryption, etc) in the 
tether - no effect

Hope this information helps narrow the problem.

Had problem connecting to on Dell Studio with Intel WiFi Link 5100 card.
After installing the latest driver from Intel everything works like a charm.
(I have rooted Samsung Captivate from ATT with latest firmware and 
wireless_tether_2_0_6-pre4.apk)

Updating to latest Intel driver (http://www.intel.com/support/detect.htm)

Same as others. Thinkpad T410s. Intel 6300N. I've tried as others have with no 
luck. I am able to connect to my EPIC using a Macbook and old thinkpad x40 that 
I have in the house.

It is interesting that I was able to connect with the T410s before "upgrading" 
to Froyo and flashing a custom ROM.

I have the same issue with Epic 4g running Froyo and the latest version of wifi 
tether.

Windows 7 Ultimate
Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6200 (rev 35)
Will not connect

however

my Ubuntu 10.10 partition connects flawlessy and holds its connection great

this problem is all due to Intel's driver for their wireless cards and I would 
suggest trying to get support for them.

I have an HP pavilion with an Intel 5100 AGN wireless card, an Epic 4G running 
Android v2.1 & wireless tether v2.0.7.

The issue is all Intel.  The old drivers have difficulty connecting to ad-hoc 
networks, and Wireless Tether establishes an ad-hoc network (it can't be 
configured to be an access point). Once I updated the driver to v13.5.0.6 it 
worked like a champ.  Current drivers are here:

After 3 days of searching ive found the solution for the intel centrino 
advanced-n 6200 agn wireless. Download the attached file I have included and go 
into device manager click network right click the intel wifi card and go to 
driver tab. uninstal the driver and instal the attached driver. Restart and 
attempt. SUCCESS

I have HP Pavilion DV7 with Vista x64, Atheros AR5009 802.11a/g/n WiFi Adapter, 
Android 2.1-update1 (Cricket) and Android Tether (2.0.7 originally) with 
2.0.8-pre1 currently.  My laptop will not connect to the Android Tether ad-hoc 
with either of these versions of Android Tether.  The repair does not fix 
anything, changing channels does nothing and changing the LAN ip network does 
not fix anything.  I see a previous thread about 2.0.5 having infrastructure 
mode, but I don't see that in 2.0.7 or 2.0.8.  I have an older HP Pavilion ZE 
model with a Proxim PCCard that does connect and gets internet access 
perfectly, so the problem has to be with the DV7 and/or Atheros drivers.

Any solutions for this one?

Same system as comment #67 and I've found a different bug, I normally have my 
wifi off (to save power), and after installing the Tether program (2.0.7), I 
could not turn "on" my wifi.  I press the icon and it says "updating wifi 
settings" but the icon never shows that it's enabled (it just shows a grayed 
out icon as if it's disabled, and the wifi icon in the top menu by the clock 
and 3G icons never shows up).  So I did a few more tests, I removed the tether 
program, and my wifi icon started working again (both on and off).  So I left 
it enabled, downloaded the tether again (2.0.7), and my wifi remained enabled.  
That seems good, I then tried to turn it off and that too worked.  But then I 
tried to turn it on again, and it would not turn on.  I removed your tether 
program again, and it worked as normal again.  Something is interfering with 
turning "on" my wifi from within your program.

ANSWER:

Anyone having problems with Intel Centrino Advanced N 6200 not connecting to 
Android Tether, downgrade your driver to version 13.1.1.1 .  This seemed to fix 
my issue and several other people.

Running:

Windows 7 32bit
Dell E6510
Intel Centrino Advanced N 6200 ( now driver version 13.1.1.1)

This is how i fixed the problem.

activated hotspot on my arc, and waited for my laptop to connect. After you get 
connected your laptop adapter will show limited connectivity/no internet.

Now go to the market and download "Network info"
open network info and find out the IP address of your device.

it will be something like 192.168.43.1

now go to to your wireless setting of your laptop, and change the settings to 
DHCP to static.
if your phone has IP 192.168.43.1
Then configure your laptop's ip 192.168.43.2 subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway will 
be your phones IP. ie 192.168.43.1.

dns 8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4

:) DONE

problem with windows 7 x64 is that it doesn't gets the IP addy form your phone. 
Thats why it shows limited connectivity.

The problem I faced is same as the one descrbed in comment72#.
Simply follow the guide in comment72#, laptop connects mobilephone well.
My laptop is dell e4310(win 7), my mobile device moto milestone2.
But my other mobile device HTC T5353( WM6.5), still can not connect.

On the advice of Comment #72 I downloaded Network Info II on my Sprint 2.1 Hero.

Unfortunately the IP address of my device is a Sprint IP (174.x.x.x) and not 
the IP address that I have Wireless Tether configured to use (10.10.1.0/24). I 
have tried configuring Wifi Tether to use different LAN Networks but the result 
is the same.

Wifi Tether requests and is given Superuser permissions but Windows 7 
Enterprise (and Google ChromeOS) are unable to connect to the phone.

I have the same issue listed in #67, I can not connect to my HP G60-440 with a 
Atheros ar5009 Windows 7. Everything seem to be in order the tethering is 
noticed in my Wireless Network connection, but it just times out to the and 
goes to the 'trouble shooter' program. 
My son's computer which is about 7 years old, had no problem tethering to the 
Samsung Epic Touch Galaxy 2 4g Sprint phone. It even worked great! 
The frustrating part is that I need it to work on mine...

Been reading tons of posts with on luck, Anyone?

Comment #26 gets it to work, but the fix is temporary.

Originally I could get my iPod to connect, but not Windows 7. I read comment 
#26 and just changed the network to a 172 block and the channel to channel 6 
and tried Windows again and it worked. *However*, after not using the setup for 
a while (either the phone went to sleep or the computer went to sleep or both) 
I could not resume the connection. I stopped and then started Wifi Tethering 
(with the main button, didn't exit the program) and still couldn't get it to 
work. Then I changed the LAN settings again to a different 172 block and it 
worked.

So this works but you have to change the settings every time the computer 
disconnects from the network. I tried enabling ACL as recommended by a 
different comment for a permanent fix, but that did not help. I'm guessing that 
the DHCP service isn't responding to some requests, because others are 
reporting success with manually configuring the IP address, and also because 
when using Linux command-line tools on a different machine, that was the step 
that would fail.

Thanks for posting http://www.intel.com/support/detect.htm. The DHCP works 
faster and consistently now. Before, I had an alternate static setting, but 
upgrading the driver got rid of the need to do that.

Here's the solution that worked for me in a lot of systems : 

Press the Windows logo and "R" keys simultaneously to display the "Run" dialog 
box. Type "devmgmt.msc" without quotation marks into the box and press "Enter." 
The Windows device manager will appear.

Double-click "Network Adapters" to expand the category.

Right-click your wireless network adapter and click "Properties."

Click the "Advanced" tab, then click "Ad Hoc Channel 802.11" under "Property" 
on the left side of the window.

Use the arrows on the right side of the window to see the channel.

Now in your android device when you configure your hotspot, make sure "Advanced 
options" are enabled and then under the Broadcast channel make sure you put the 
same channel number as is present in your PC (Which you saw in the steps above) 
and then connect. Voila !!!!
