I used to have HTC Touch pro running windows mobile on it. I used to wifi
tethering via wmrouter and my phone would always got hot and drains battery so
fast that even charger couldn't keep up. However I cahnged the phone to Touch2
and it never had any problem. I even changed into new battery thinking battery
might be issue. However my finding is that it is faulty phone and if it was
under warranty, i would send it to back to manufacturer.
Another quick thing you might try to increase battery little bit is to take
battery cover off and if possible put the battery next to ac vent or so. You
could also get 1 amp charger instead of stock 500ma charger .

This is for Android. And as you can see to my earlier post, my issue has been
merged into another non relevant one. Wow, great app, but I'm disappointed with
how you kinda abandoned my issue.

Droid running FRG22D also gets extremely hot running this even for only a few
minutes. I tried to turn down the CPU clock to compensate, but it doesn't help
much. I'm concerned that it's overheating the radio because 3G data
connectivity drops in and out, which is also a real pain.

G1 running Cyanogen 5 also gets hot. I'm thinking that because of hardware
limitations or bad components the phone gets hot. (cooling it with a frozen
water bottle now :D) Battery gets eaten really fast (plugged in through usb and
sometimes it doesn't provide enough power an shuts down).

I am thinking the issue of battery drainage even when being charged is due to
excessive heat.
The article at:
http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batterie
s
states that "The speed by which lithium-ion ages is governed by temperature and
state-of-charge."

My theory is this: the CPU uses the battery as a heat sink thus causing the
battery to heat up. I notice it most when downloads are happening.

I noticed this problem on my Thunderbolt 4G. I only really use the WiFi tether
in the 4G areas so I'm not sure if this is caused by that specifically.
However I do notice that it gets to approximately 120 degrees Fahrenheit even
when just one device is connected and having a constant stream such as video
chat.

D2G. Battery drains faster than phone can charge, even though it is plugged in.
Gets very hot.

Is there a cpu throttle that can be tied to a given application cpu use (as
opposed to out right use)? And option to root-FC for abusive apps?

mb so of course it will a phone dont have a internal fan you dont wanna run

if you have the phone plugged in of course it will run hot shurlock
like i said dont run your phone hot it will damage it put it in front of a fan
and if your charging it still put it in front of a fan because if your
tethering its draining batter while your charging like if your phone at 30%
charging and your tethering by the time your done its most likely gonna be at
10% or so so really your not charging it and by the time your battery turns red
the connection will slow i recomend to have it fully chared

Yep, Wifi Tethering drained my battery in well under an hour (maybe 15-30
min?). The battery was hot, and more importantly, was losing charge even though
it was plugged in. In the morning, after a night with no download demands, the
battery was still nearly empty - after 8 hrs of charging!
I'm guessing that the hot battery wouldn't take a charge, but as long as it was
plugged in, it wouldn't cool sufficiently, either. Sigh.
Now that I think of it, the phone was probably face-down on a wooden surface.
Semi-insulated, in a way. Back-up (so the battery heat is close to air flow)
would be better.

ecstacyz, it looks like you might have something interesting to say, but with
all your run-on sentences, it's very hard to read, and no one is likely to
bother trying to do so as they run through this thread. Just FYI.

Yes, Wifi Tethering does drain the battery faster than the phone can charge. It
seems the only thing I've decided to do with this is make the best out of the
situation and minimize damage.
I put my phone on top of an icepack with multiple paper towels. It keeps my
battery at a nice 50 degrees Fahrenheit and I can use the tether for several
hours until I have to switch out my ice pack for extended periods of surfing.
It does die as soon as I unplug it from power though.

I believe that the problem has to do with rfi and transmit power. Basically,
the wifi and cellphone
are interfering with each other, and each one cranks up its transmit power to
compensate.
IIRC both interfacces have this capability.

i've had to replace my battery since the tethering cooked it. Got up to 60
celsius and basically make the battery worthless. Regardless of being able to
actually keep the phone cool during tethering, how about a simple shutdown
trigger, based on the temperature sensor rather than a data limit? It would be
easy to implement and save everyone from the same problem I experienced. Just
something to think about for the next version...
