Initial 'start game' interface should have a time option #310

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Open Pychess

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
There should be an option to turn time on/off in the games created by the
interface showed when you open pychess.

What version of the product are you using?
Pychess 0.8

Did you use an installed version of PyChess or did you run in from a
tarball/svn?
I used the version from Ubuntu 7.10 repository.

Hey Lancelot,
If I understand you correctly, you wan't the quick-starter, in the initial
window, to
have a time option as well as the File->New Game dialog.

I'm not sure this is a good idea, as it will take up to much space, and as the
starters are supposed to be very minimal. Perhaps we merely need to clarify the
availability of the File->New Game dialog?

Yeah, pretty much it. Maybe just a checkbox to turn it on/off?
A way to enable/disable the time while the game is running would solve this
problem, too.

You mean in a xboard like way, where you just start a game, and then change all
options while playing.
Actually PyChess was supposed to be like that, but to make it more like a real
chessboard, other programs and to keep consitency with FICS, an "options first"
approach was taken.

Adding an extra checkbox would make the box too high. I already this it is,
actually.
I see two other possibilities though:
   * Have a way to set default clock in the preferences
   * Chaning the current sun-image for an interactive clock widget. This widget could
work like a checkbutton, and get a red cross over it, when you click it. It
could,
however, also have a draggable hand..

I don't think this will be changed, but perhaps the starters can have a small
button
to open their respective dialogs. Like in Office 2007.

Does this work?

To change the time you should open the dialog from the menu, or by pressing the
icon.
