This is a better error to get then the corruption/weirdness you'll get if you run this without root. Can we move this to gitlab? they are an objectively better git host for open source... as they are open source themselves.

thanks for the pr. i'm not interested in hassling with moving this project, but I will say this since everything microsoft touches turns to shit I'll be starting all my new projects on gitlab.

@chovy Their migrator was buckling at the seams... since they fixed their bottle necks yesterday, things have been crazy quick (<5m)... it even imports issues and comments. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYOXuOg9tQI

I totally get it if you've been directly linking this on a bunch of servers.
