for an executable file

file /usr/local/scisoft/packages/sm/bin/sm /usr/local/scisoft/packages/sm/bin/sm: Mach-O executable i386

this executable is not working on Mac SIlicon M1 Rosetta terminal and gives the error

zsh: bad CPU type in executable: sm

Why is an i386 executable not working on Rosetta (which has arch i386)?

Any suggestions are welcome
