[FEA] Use `dextents` inside `make_extents` #818

mdspan already contains a factory for creating extents here. We should consider calling this in our make_extents function (or using directly). I'm leaning towards calling it in our own make_extents function just for consistency with the other factory functions but maybe others feel differently. I could really go either way with it.
